    Very nice display but the brightness is a little too dim for my liking below 5.5V. Is there anything that can be done to improve brightness below 5.5V?

    If you can spare the time, you could revers-engineer the circuit to find out if there are resistors on the module that define the LED current, and if the chip is capable of delivering a higher segment current. But this would be your only option since no further documentation for the module exist.
